Electricity flows with us. On behalf of Switzerland and in cooperation with international partners, we do our utmost every day to develop the best solutions for the Swiss electricity grid.

Are you passionate about solving real-world problems with data and innovation? Curious about how data science powers the energy transition? Join our forward-thinking and collaborative Development & Optimization team as an intern, where your work will have a tangible impact on shaping the future of electrical grid operations.

Intern Applied Data Science & Machine Learning (80-100%) - 9-12 Months - 1389

Participate in the power supply in Switzerland

You’ll dive into challenging and meaningful data science projects in a dynamic, cross-functional environment. You’ll work with cutting-edge cloud technologies and a modern tech stack, experience agile teamwork, and gain hands-on exposure to Switzerland’s transmission system operation – all while learning from and contributing to an interdisciplinary, supportive, and passionate team.

Get ready to roll up your sleeves and explore challenges like:

  • Building forecasting models that solve real-world problems in the energy sector with a focus on scalability, robustness, and real-world application.
  • Building data pipelines that efficiently handle large-scale, time-series data to support reliable and scalable model development and deployment.
  • Exploring and analyzing data to uncover valuable insights, engineer suitable features, and improve forecasting accuracy.
  • Experimenting with different techniques to optimize performance - from hyperparameter tuning to innovative algorithmic approaches.
  • Implementing your models into Swissgrid’s important operational workflows, ensuring they run reliably, securely, and efficiently at scale.
  • Monitoring the deployed models to track performance and handle model drift.
  • Documenting your work clearly and consistently so others can understand, track, and build on your progress - because great science is shared science.
  • Collaborating across teams, engaging with stakeholders for feedback, alignment, and continuous improvement, and ensuring your work ties directly into broader business needs.

This is how you make the difference

We are looking for someone who has a strong analytical mindset to develop innovative data science solutions - not someone who checks every box. But here’s what will help you thrive:

  • You are studying (or recently finished) a Master’s or PhD in a relevant field like Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Economics, or similar.
  • You have strong Python skills and have hands-on experience with MLOps tools (Scikit-learn, PyTorch, MLflow), Apache Spark, and data analytics and infrastructure platforms such as Databricks and Azure.
  • You are familiar with time-series data analysis and predictive models.
  • You have a solid knowledge of Git and GitHub, such as resolving merge conflicts, and collaborating via pull requests.
  • Knowledge of transmission grid operations and electricity market is a plus.
  • You communicate fluently in English.

Above all, we value curiosity, a strong drive to learn, and a problem-solving mindset over prior experience and educational background. If you're eager to tackle complex data science challenges and grow in a dynamic environment, we encourage you to apply – even if you don’t meet every requirement. 🚀

What we offer

  • A comprehensive look behind the scenes of the electricity industry and an understanding of its challenges, as well as in-depth insights into the development of the grid of the future
  • Varied and exciting tasks within a company unique to SwitzerlandFlexible working hours as part of a motivated team
  • 25–30 days of holiday, as well as company holiday between Christmas and New Year
  • A state-of-the-art work environment in the immediate vicinity of Aarau railway station
  • After completion of the internship, opportunities for continuing to work for the company can be discussed if desired
