Power Switzerland's Energy Future – From Day One

At Swissgrid, we don't just observe the energy transition, we engineer it. As the operator of Switzerland's national transmission grid, we sit at the nexus of a rapidly evolving European electricity market. Our Market Optimization & Decision Support team develops forecasting and automation solutions that directly support grid operators in their 24/7 mission to ensure a reliable power supply. By joining us, you will contribute to impactful work at the heart of Switzerland’s electricity system.

The Internship: Where Learning Meets Real Impact

You’ll work on challenging and meaningful data science and machine learning projects. You’ll gain unique insights into the Swiss transmission system while working alongside a motivated, international team of data scientists and engineers. The work is real from day one—real data, real decisions, and real impact. You’ll have access to a modern, cloud-native tech stack and the latest AI development tools, and you’ll be encouraged to bring and run with your creative, AI-driven approaches to complex data problems.

What you will work on

Roll up your sleeves for challenges like these:

  • Build and ship forecasting models that solve real energy-sector problems with a sharp focus on safety, scalability, and production robustness. You'll experiment freely: tuning hyperparameters, benchmarking architectures, and proposing novel approaches.
  • Design and build data pipelines that process large-scale time-series data reliably and efficiently, forming the backbone of model training and deployment workflows.
  • Explore and analyze data surface hidden patterns, engineer high-signal features, and push forecasting accuracy further.
  • Work AI-natively – integrate AI tools into your daily development practice to sharpen analysis, accelerate iteration, smoothen workflows and improve efficiencies.
  • Collaborate and communicate across teams, gather feedback from stakeholders, and make sure your work connects meaningfully to the broader business mission.

What Makes You a Great Fit

We are looking for a builder – someone with the curiosity to experiment and the discipline to deliver. You'll thrive here if you bring:

  • Academic foundation: Currently pursuing (or recently completed) a Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Economics, or a related field.
  • Strong Python skills and solid software engineering instincts – version control, clean code, and reproducible workflows are second nature to you.
  • Machine learning depth: A genuine understanding of classical ML, statistical methods, time-series modeling, and predictive systems. Hands-on experience with libraries like Scikit-learn, PyTorch, or MLflow is a plus; familiarity with Apache Spark is a bonus.
  • AI-native mindset: You use GenAI tools to build things, not just to ask questions. Show us what you've already shipped.
  • Energy domain curiosity: Knowledge of transmission grid operations or electricity markets is a plus – but your drive to learn matters more.
  • Above all, we value curiosity, agency, and a growth mindset. If you're the kind of person who gets energized by hard problems and wants your work to matter, we'd love to hear from you. 🚀

What we offer

  • Unique industry access – an immersive, behind-the-scenes look at Switzerland's electricity infrastructure and the challenges of building the grid of the future.
  • Meaningful work – varied and exciting tasks within a company unique to Switzerland., with real ownership from the start.
  • Flexibility – flexible working hours as part of a motivated, welcoming team.
  • 25 days of holiday, plus company holidays between Christmas and New Year.
  • A modern workplace in the immediate vicinity of Aarau, with a state-of-the-art technical environment.
