Electricity flows with us. On behalf of Switzerland and in cooperation with international partners, we do our utmost every day to develop the best solutions for the Swiss electricity grid.

For our team in our headquarters in Aarau, we are looking for 6-12 months for an

Intern Machine Learning & Automation (80-100%) - 1264

Ensure that electricity flows in Switzerland

As the first European transmission system operator, Swissgrid will largely automate the procurement of grid-stabilizing balancing energy with the help of an autopilot. This in-house developed autopilot generates real-time forecasts and autonomously activates the balancing energy through a market – eliminating the need for manual interventions. By doing so, Swissgrid sets new standards for innovation, efficiency, reliability, and scalability.
As an intern in the Development & Optimization team, you will work on the continuous improvement of this autopilot, aiming to boost performance and reliability. You will experience agile collaboration in an interdisciplinary and fast-paced environment, leverage a cutting-edge tech stack and cloud technologies, and play an active role in shaping the future of electrical grid operations.
You will be challenged with:

  • The development of new machine learning models for forecasting balancing energy demand and evaluate their performance in live operation.
  • You ensure that machine learning models operate reliably, scalably, and efficiently in production by implementing MLOps practices
  • You set new standards in our data ecosystem to enhance the efficiency and robustness of the autopilot.

This is how you make a difference

We are seeking a highly motivated and passionate individual who excels both independently and in a collaborative team environment. You have a strong analytical mindset, a creative approach to problem-solving, and develop innovative solutions.
Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field.
  • Prior experience with the following programming languages and technologies: Python, C++, MLOps (MLflow), CUDA, Spark, and data analytics and infrastructure platforms such as Databricks, Azure, AWS, or GCP.
  • Hands-on experience in developing and deploying machine learning models is a plus.
  • Knowledge of transmission grid operations, particularly in frequency control and balancing energy markets, is advantageous.

Above all, we value curiosity, a strong drive to learn, and a problem-solving mindset over prior experience. If you're eager to tackle complex challenges, adapt quickly, and grow in a dynamic environment, we encourage you to apply—even if you don’t meet every requirement.

What we offer

We offer varied and exciting tasks in a company that is unique in Switzerland. You will also benefit from the following advantages:

  • Comprehensive insight into the electricity industry and its challenges, as well as in-depth insights into the development of the grid of the future
  • Versatile and exciting tasks in a company that is unique in Switzerland
  • Flexible working hours in a motivated team
  • 25-30 working days holiday and company holidays between Christmas and New Year
  • State-of-the-art working environment in the immediate vicinity of Aarau railway station

About us

The electricity industry is undergoing radical change. In Europe, more and more large centralized power plants are being replaced by a large number of decentralized, small renewable power plants. This change poses new challenges. We in the Development & Optimization team develop optimization algorithms and decision support tools for the optimal procurement and use of ancillary services. We are also responsible for the further development of the IT platform for the Swiss ancillary services market and coordinate the project portfolio for the entire business unit.
